The UEFA Champions League (UCL), regarded as the highest competition in the world, has an effect of helping European country’s leagues to boom. Clubs in the leagues such as the English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and etc are driven to enter the UCL. This is because of their presence of top-tier teams and players, extensive global coverage, and the high stakes and financial rewards associated with winning. The UCL has some other variations. The UCL is for th clubs in Europe. The Concacaf champions cup is for the American clubs. Lastly, the AFC Asian Champions league for Asians. As the popularity of soccer competitions are concentrated in the UCL, the AFC and Concacaf became a growing industry to spread soccer influence. Can the two competitions be helpful toward the development of the country’s league like the UCL?
The AFC can serve as a catalyst for the development of a country’s league. One interesting example is Korean side Gwangju FC. They are one of the least favorites in Korea for the title. But reached the quarterfinals of the AFC despite being evaluated as one of the weakest teams in the competition. They suffered a seven goal defeat in the quarterfinals. The awareness of both the team and the Korean league rose significantly, even if only temporarily. This makes it a great success to the league. It is temporarily boosting the recognition of the league. However, there are several issues with the competition. The unbalance of the level of teams in the competition. AFC is open to all countries in Asia, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Malaysian clubs. However, countries from the Middle East are also eligible. The clubs in Saudi Arabia especially, such as Al Itthiad, Al Nassr, and Al Hilal. These teams have an enormous amount of money. This allowed them to have players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Kalidou Koulibaly. These players, who are top class level players that are still considered good enough to play in the top divisions of soccer leagues all around the world, are playing against players in Korea, Japan, China, and so on. This creates a significant imbalance of level between the clubs allowing the Saudi clubs to become overly competitive. Like Gwangju FC, they have made it to the quarter finals after a miracle in the round of 16, they have been defeated by Al Hilal by seven in the quarter final. However this issue can be solved, with the countries of the weaker sides investing more on the soccer industry. Although they would not have money power like the Middle east with their ‘oil money’, the weaker clubs would still have a chance like Gwangju FC in Korea this year.
The Concacaf champions cup, is also known as the North/Central American Champions league. The competition is open to Americans, Mexicans, Canadians, and etc. Unlike the AFC, the competition is more balanced. The countries have similar levels of players making the games more unpredictable and entertaining. However, the level of awareness of this event is limited. Only the people in the Americas watch these games. Making the competition have less accessibility, around the world. This issue can be resolved through more awareness campaigns on the internet, or more incentives or advantages added on for this event. Through this, it would allow the teams to become more focused on this competition, leading the people to also have awareness and wanting to watch the games both online and offline. To watch them online, it would need accessibility through broadcasting rights with Apple as an instance.
As there are additional variations of the UEFA Champions League, which is considered the world’s top competition. The AFC Asian Champions League and the Concacaf Champions Cup are for clubs in other parts of the world, such the Americas and Asias, while the UEFA UCL is just for clubs in Europe. With the resolve of a few issues such as accessibility and the imbalance of power between teams, the AFC and Concacaf could become as successful as the UEFA UCL in the future.
