What would be a restraint from the MLS to become more successful? The salary cap, which provides balance to MLS, could possibly be modified in order to promote higher league level. It is a financial limit on how much a team can spend on player or staff salaries. In the MtLS, each team can have up to about $6million salary cap, and is about $750k per player. If the team goes over that limit of $6mil, the team would receive a fine, forfeit of future draft picks, and etc. However, the league allows up to three players to go over that limit. Known as the Designated Players (DP) rule, allows certain players to go over the salary cap to promote the team to become a higher level team. However, the salary cap still has issues that could not be overcome with the DP rule, and here are the reasons why the salary cap would need looser limitations on not the amount of the players for DP, but the increase in the amount of money that restrains the players to earn more.
A change in the increase the limit of the salary cap, to allow more than maximum 750k. The possible dissatisfaction from players due to uneven pays. As the league has set the limit for players’ maximum pay as about 750k, some players that fit under the DP rule can go over it. For example, the average pay of a MLS team Inter Miami is around 500k. However, as the team has a superstar, Lionel Messi, who gets paid about 20mil. This shows a significant difference between a single superstar and an average player in the MLS. This can cause discontent within the players to cause a significant difference in the pay, harming the team chemistry. Although the player is Lionel Messi, a superstar that is debated as one of the best. Still, the significant change can cause issues like team chemistry affecting the overall performance from the team. In this case, better players in the MLS could receive more money to be content enough to compete with superstars. This could possibly give the players with more motivation to play for the team, as the team pays more for the player, the fans would also expect more from these high paid players.
Also, the increase in the salary cap could lead to better competitiveness within the league. As the salary cap limit is higher, more possible stars could play in the MLS. Although the DP rule allows this to happen (max. 3 players), more stars could lead to the league becoming more competitive and more widespread. Such as when a single superstar, Lionel Messi had arrived to the MLS, the league started to boom with much more accessibility and with more interest. Although it could be argued that it boomed because it was Lionel Messi, a massive superstar. But when Lorezno Insigne, a former Napoli SSC star, came to the MLS, the league also showed a high increase in interest to watch the player play in the league. This shows that with looser restriction of the salary cap limit, the league could face more positive interests from the people. Ultimately, this would lead to more interest toward the league allowing more successful business to occur within the league.
There is a clear representation of the salary cap issues. Maya Yoshida, the former captain of the Japanese national team who played in the English Premier League and the Bundesliga, currently playing for LA Galaxy has faced an issue with the salary cap. He has faced a pay cut in his contract renegotiation due to MLS salary cap constraints. This shows that players with reputations who want to play for the MLS might change their mind as they might face similar issues with Maya Yoshida.
This shows that the salary cap, which provides balance to MLS, could possibly be modified as having looser salary cap limitations could possibly benefit the league through having more class players into the American soccer industry. With small changes such as this, could lead the league to become more beneficial.
